My quest for the perfect thin wallet

June 20th, 2007 · No Comments

In my quest for the perfect thin wallet, I’ve moved away from leather models and have been a very satisfied user of the ALL-ETT billfold for a couple of years. However, sometimes I only want to protect a couple of credit cards and some notes. That’s when I use a wallet that I’ve made myself out of a single A4 or Letter sized sheet of paper, as described on Instructables. The one I  made using a single side of a Tyvek envelope has been used on a daily basis for several weeks without any sign of wear or tear.

Stretching exercises while seated

January 6th, 2007 · No Comments

It’s all too easy to sit for hours in front of the PC, typing away and forgetting to take breaks. We all know the result – muscle tension in the neck and shoulders and a real threat of repetitive strain injury. There are many software applications available to remind you about taking breaks. Some of these go a step further and prevent you from continuing your activities on the PC until you take a mandatory break and preferably complete their suggested stretching exercises. Even though I find these applications intrusive, since they often pop-up at the most inconvenient times interrupting a train of thought and preventing me from completing a sentence or saving my work, I know it’s very important to take regular breaks and complete a few stretching exercises.

I do a lot of long distance flying and am aware of the risk of deep vein thrombosis, which can result from sitting in one position for long periods of time. Most long distance carriers include descriptions of stretching exercises in their flight magazines, or show demonstration videos, which really do have a positive effect. The MSU Ergonomics Information website provides simple illustrations and instructions for similar, effective exercises.

The Cook’s Thesaurus

December 28th, 2006 · No Comments

If you’re looking for a cooking encyclopedia, then The Cook’s Thesaurus is a good place to start. The database describes thousands of ingredients and kitchen tools and includes pictures, descriptions, synonyms, and pronunciations. Another useful feature is that you can search for suggested substitutions for ingredients, e.g.

turmeric = fresh turmeric = Indian ginger = yellow ginger = mango ginger  Pronunciation:  TUR-muhr-ik  Shopping hints:   Turmeric has a pungent flavor, but it’s more widely known for it’s brilliant yellow color.  You can find fresh roots in Southeast Asian and Indian markets, but dried ground turmeric is far more commonly used.  Be careful when handling fresh turmeric–it can stain your hands and clothes.   Equivalents:  1 piece fresh turmeric = 1 teaspoon powdered turmeric.  Substitutes:  ground turmeric OR saffron (much more expensive, and more flavorful) OR Steep annatto seeds in boiling water for 20 minutes, then discard the seeds.
